Hendersonville Defeats Asheville and Brevard, but Loses to Spartanburg. The baseball game between Hendersonville and Asheville last Saturday at Barnwell Park result ed in a victory for Henderson ville by 9 to 0, Asheville having forfeited the game. Umpire Moore ordered one of the Ashe villfc players out of the game. The Asheville team then refused to' continue the game, and under the rules of the league they for feited the game by their refusal. Monday and Tuesday our team played at Spartanburg. Both games were won by Spartanburg, the scores being-6 to Son Mon day ami 3 to 0 on .Tuesdav. Hendersonville and Brevard played at Barnwell Park 'Wed nesday, and Hendersonville was victorious. The score was 4 to 1. Saturday's srame has been the cause of much discussion. A special to the Asheville Citizen gave the following version : The arapire won for the locals early in the game to-day. It was in the last half of the first. Hendersonville had three 'scores to Ashevifle's 2, when Gilen made too much noise on the coaeh line to start the umpire. He sent Giles to the bench, declaring that he could not play in the game. Asheville protested, bm no argument would change the umpired decision. He gave the game to Hendersonville, 9 to 0 It will be protested, and as Hender sonville has as great a kick on the in dicator man as Asheville, it is altogeth er probable that the game will be played over. The Citizen's reporter was in error, and Sam T. Hodges jr. wrote the following statement which the Citizen published : Editor cf The Citizen : I wish to cor rect the report of the baseball game played here on Saturday the 23d. and reported in your issue of the 24th. I do not know from what source you re ceived your information, bat it was a very "distorted statement, calculated to mislead. The trouble originated when Mr. Gilea, of the Ashe ville team, came to the bat:: one -strike was called on him and be cursed the umpire (Mr. Moore). He applied an epithet too vile to be princed and repeated it. Several gen tlemen, who .had ladies with them, came to me at the window, where I was selling tickets, and asked me ii we intended to permit the use of such language. Mr. Gilea after getting his base and making bis run, went to the coaching line at third base and pro ceeded immediately to make himself objectionable The umpire repeatedly ordered him to stay out of the diamond And on the coaching line, but he might just as well have spoken to a deaf aaaan for all the good it did. Giles was in tbe -diamond nearly all of the time. Finally he took a glass of lem onade and ran out to the pitcher, who was preparing to -deliver the ball to a batter. Cue runner was on base, and the batter had two strikes on him ; two men were out The umpire order ed Giles out of the diamond again and when he refused to go he ordered him out of the game. Messrs. Holt and Coggins refused to play with Giles out of the game so they forfeited the game to Hendersonville. The only way Mr. Giles could be gotten off the diamond was to have the sheriff take him off. which he did at my request. If an umpire can't have order on the ball grounds there can be no pleasure in any game, you will see by reading the playing rules adopted by this league that the umpire is the sole mas ter of the field. There had been no kicking at any decision made by Mr. Moore and fifty people can be produc ed here who will make affidavit that that they heard Mr. Gilee swear and use the objectionable language com plained of and that the facts are just as I have stated them. I was much supprised at men like Messrs. Coggins and Holt upholding Mr. Giles in each . (Continued on fifth page.) LETTER FROM THE CAPITAL Last Thursday was the forty third anniversary of the Battle of Bull Run," "one ot the best plan ned and worst fought battles of the war." Those who were liv ing at that time vividly remem bers the panic which prevailed in Washington as the retreating soldiers and such congressmen as were not captured, came strug gling back into the city, exhaust ed and frightened. The battle is to be fought over again in Sep tember on t he plains of Manassas. Va., under the command of Gen eral Corbin. "it is announced that Georgia., will be represented by a lull brigade, and Connecti cut is making preparations to send all of its militia. Probably not less than thirty thousand men will take part in the under arms maneuvers. paig Thus far the political cam is very silent, but the real opening gun will be fired next Wednesday, at Oyster Bay, by the President. Mr. Cortelyou says he does not wish to discuss the politi cal situation until after the formal notification. Senator Scott of W. Va., takes that state out of the doubtful column. The -pleasant pur gative effect of these Tablets makes them a favorite with ladies every where. For Sale by W. H. Justus i The action of the St. Louis con vention, with its straddle on the silver question and its endeavor to adopt a platform which would be unobjectionable to persons of all political faiths, has not suc ceeded in its efforts. Great of fense has been taken by many Westerners in consequence of the Praker tangle. A. W. Max well, the Iowa democratic state chairman, has resigned that po sition, giving his reasons as fol lows : Unable to countenance, aid, or sup port the candidates or platform of the tit. Louis convention, I have tendered my resignation as a member of the State central committee and as chair man of the same body. Theannounce ment of my determination to repudiate the ticket has been delayed until this date in an effort to persuade myself that there was enough good in the candidate and the platform to justify me in remaining loyal to the ticket Thus far I have discovered absolutely nothing to commend it to the voters of the country. Its surrender to Wall street has been so complete as to leave no doubt of the party's futher course. Dominated as it is by the trusts of the country, I can see absolutely no hope for the party in the future and no hope' for the country if by accident Parker aud Davis should be elected. The party has been bound, gagged, and delivered bodily into the control of the very interests I have been fight ine for the past eiuht years, and if its candidates, who are subservient to the Standard Oil Company aud their trusts shall be elected, it must be without my aid or sanction. I shall in the near future issue a more extended state ment of my reasons for refusing to support the ticket in view or my inability to support the ticket, I, of course, shall not attend the conven tion at Iowa City. A. VV. Maxwell, m Hill and Parker. New York Sun. What Hill gained for. Judge Parker by his transaction with Bryan was a nomination in the dark which Hill did not believe possible in the daylight. Such is the case in a nutshell. Uiider the circumstances, the respectable and respected nominee has done all that he can do, short of withdrawing from the campaign unless, indeed, he turns his face to the woods and obeys liter ally the Scriptural precept, "Curse David ! Women love tnirrors because they don't flatter and they love men be cause they do. The'average man would be tickled half to death for a chance to pay a large inheritance tax.
